St. Lawrence Friary Home of the Capuchins Renovation Project Update
St. Lawrence Friary, home to the Capuchin Province of the Sacred Stigmata, has served both its Franciscan Friars and the Beacon community with open arms and a willing heart.
St. Lawrence is a place that welcomes those that seek the presence of God through prayer and liturgical worship. The Friars devote their time sharing God's word and His love to all who pass through the doors of St. Lawrence.
St. Lawrence has also been a long-standing pillar in the city of Beacon. The Korean Catholic community frequently uses St. Lawrence as their place of worship. Other groups use the Friary for meetings.
The 72-year history of St. Lawrence has, however, outlived its physical structure. Sections of the Friary have not been renovated since 1956. Lack of handicap accessibility is a major concern as St. Lawrence accommodates physically-challenged Friars. In order to meet the needs of others, the Province had to propose a challenging assignment to its donors - to assist in the renovation project of St. Lawrence Friary.
The Province launched a long-term capital campaign in 2006 to renovate the Friary. Friars believed a complete overhaul of St. Lawrence would be more cost-effective than the ongoing maintenance efforts to the outdated building.
Through your support contractors have begun the renovation process. Below is an update on some of the project developments:
Much of the plumbing system at St. Lawrence no longer worked, forcing all Friars to live in one wing of the Friary. The Friary*s pipe system has now been replaced with 8* pipes
Many sections of St. Lawrence were not handicap-accessible prior to the start of this project. Since the project*s inception, the kitchen has been expanded and the bedrooms have been remodeled to provide more space and accessibility for physically- challenged Friars and guests
The first floor is now equipped with two bathrooms (men and women) for public use
Installation of an elevator for additional handicap accessibility
All rooms now have heat and air conditioning
St. Lawrence did not have a fire sprinkler system. Since the start of the project, a sprinkler system has been installed
The water line has been replaced to the street.
We thank our Lord for blessing us with you as a supporter of our cause. It is our hope that you will continue to walk in faith with us as we plan for the next phase of the Friary*s renovation that includes:
Reconstruction of stairwells to meet fire safety codes
Gutting and renovation of the community room, the second and third floors of the east wing to meet fire and safety codes
Your financial support of our mission has allowed the Province to achieve these milestones. You possess a special place in our successful past and play an integral part in the future we are destined by God to achieve.
Friars can continue to serve those that have supported the Franciscan mission.
The Friars of the Capuchin Province of the Sacred Stigmata of St. Francis thank you for your continued financial support and pray that the Spirit of Christ pours wonderful blessings upon your life.
St. Lawrence Friary, located on a 25-acre property one hour north of New York City, has served provincial Friars in several capacities throughout their Franciscan journey. Chapter meetings are held at the Friary to strengthen the bonds of Franciscan brotherhood. After many years toiling in the vineyard spreading the Gospel of Christ, the ill and elderly Friars retire, receive medical care, and enter their final resting place * all at St. Lawrence Friary.
Your gifts assist us in improving our service delivery to retired Friars and our community. Thank you for being a part of our rich Capuchin heritage.
