St. Lawrence Friary
Urgent Renovation Project
Beacon, New York
You have been so good in assisting the friars through your generosity.  Your help to the
Capuchin Franciscans today continues the ministries of such holy men like St. Francis of
Assisi, St. Anthony of Padua and St. Pio of Pietrelcina.  Your trust and confidence in helping
the friars in the past, gives me hope that I can call on you now during this time of need.
 We
are in urgent need of raising $465,000 for much needed renovations at. St. Lawrence
Friary.

St. Lawrence Friary in Beacon, New York, is one of the few properties owned by our Province.
The building has been a place of formation for 50 years and for the last 10 years it has
provided our ill and aged Friars with the quality care every family would want to give their love
ones.
St. Lawrence has two wings, the east and the west, connected in the middle by a dining
room and a chapel.
Currently, only the chapel and the west wing renovated in
1995, are habitable and in use.
Right now all friars live in the west wing, whether they
are in need of medical attention or not because of the poor conditions of the east wing.

The east wing has not been updated since 1956 and is in need of major repair.
Most of
the plumbing no longer works; rooms and stairways are not
handicapped-accessible; wiring is inadequate and unsafe; there is no elevator for
the handicapped; there is no fire sprinkler system; and the communal bathrooms
for the 28 bedrooms are non-functional.
Maintenance efforts to the east wing have
been ongoing, but we have reached a point where it would be wasteful and ineffective to
try patchwork repairs.   Due to these problems
we can not longer receive additional
Friars at St. Lawrence and no formation programs can be offered.
We can not
longer accommodate the families of infirmed friars to come to visit.
Plans call for the 2nd and 3rd floors of the east wing to be gutted and renovated as the most
cost-effective and efficient way to meet fire and safety codes and to best use the space for
present and anticipated future needs.  An elevator is needed in order to make the building
handicapped-accessible and 2 staircases and a sprinkle system need to be added in order to
meet safety and fire codes.  The 28 rooms will be reduced to 25 simple rooms each with its own
bathroom providing privacy for friars and guests.

Some of the cost for this project will be funded by grants, however, not all expenses will
be covered.  Our goal is to be able to raise $465,000 to defer the gap that the grants will
not cover.

It is through the support of our benefactors that we have been able to achieve our goals in the
past.  You can become an integral part of our plan to make this project move forward.  We are
blessed with many good people, who believe in the good work of the Friars and would like to
see us continue to care for our sick and elderly.
